They look similar and solve opposite problems. Buy the one that matches the lift that is failing you.

Gymreapers Lifting Straps — padded neoprene deadlift straps — Lifting Straps vs Wrist Wraps: Which One Do You Actually Need?

Lifting straps and wrist wraps are stocked next to each other, cost about the same, and are constantly confused. They support different joints in different lifts.

This guide explains the difference in one paragraph each, then covers what to compare on the listings.

The difference

Lifting straps — for pulling

Straps loop around the bar and your wrist so the bar does not slip out of your hands. They are used on deadlifts, rows, shrugs, and heavy pulldowns, where grip gives out before the target muscles do. Listings state strap length, material (usually cotton or nylon), and whether the wrist section is padded.

Wrist wraps — for pressing

Wraps wind tightly around the wrist joint to limit extension under load. They are used on bench press, overhead press, and heavy front-rack work. Listings state length (commonly 12 to 24 inches), stiffness, closure type, and whether the wrap is approved for a particular competition federation.

What to compare on the listing

  • Straps: length, material, padding, and loop style.
  • Wraps: length in inches, stated stiffness, and thumb-loop or closure design.
  • Any stated competition approval, if you compete.
  • Sizing — most are one-size, but check the listing.

Do you need either?

Plenty of training happens without both. They earn their place when a specific lift is limited by grip or by wrist comfort rather than by the muscles you are trying to train. Buying the wrong one is the most common mistake in this category, which is the whole reason this page exists.

Frequently asked questions

Are lifting straps and wrist wraps the same thing?
No. Straps hold the bar in your hand on pulling lifts; wraps support the wrist joint on pressing lifts.
Which should a beginner buy first?
Usually neither, until a specific lift is limited by grip or wrist comfort. When that happens, buy the one matching the lift that is failing.
